IS 190: ICTD in Practice (3 units) This course aims to provide students with an overview of the many dynamic and interdisciplinary skills that are required for successful practice in the field of ICTD. Information and Communications Technology for Development (ICTD) is the broad study of information technology to alleviate poverty and stimulate development (economic, social, and human) in developing and transitional countries. In the last 15 years, there has been an exponential expansion in the number of ICTD projects, but insufficient human skills to design and manage them, leading to a “forever-pilot” culture and a rather dismal failure rate. Successful oversight of these projects requires a combination of interdisciplinary and dynamic skills. See course website for more information.

IS 190: Technology and Poverty (3 units) This course will encourage students to think broadly about the interplay between technological systems, social processes, economic activities, and political contingencies in efforts to alleviate poverty. Students will come to understand poverty not only in terms of high-level indicators, but from a ground-level perspective as ‘the poor’ experience and describe it for themselves. The role played by individuals and societies of the developing world as active agents in processes of technology adoption and use will be a central theme. Technologies connection to socio-economic development efforts will be put into historical context by exposing students to several phases of intensive interest including the ‘green revolution,’ the push towards industrialization, the ‘appropriate technologies’ movement, and more recent interest in digital technologies.

IS 213: User Interface Design and Development (3 units)
This course covers the design, prototyping, and evaluation of user interfaces to computers which is often called Human-Computer Interaction (HCI). User interface design and human-computer interaction. Examination of alternative design. Tools and methods for design and development. Human-computer interaction. Methods for measuring and evaluating interface quality.

IS 272: Qualitative Research Methods for Information Systems and Management (3 units)
This course focuses on the use of qualitative methods for research about information technologies. Methods including interviewing, focus groups, participant observation and ethnography will be taught and practiced. Significant qualitative research findings about the social impact of information technologies will be read, to analyze what we know about IT thus far, how we know it, and as models of theories and methods for future research. Frequent field exercises will be assigned to develop qualitative research skills and best practices, but the primary assignment will be to engage in a substantial fieldwork project. Methods covered will include video if grant support or other budget resources are found.

IS 283: Information and Communications Technology for Development (3 units)
This course reviews the current literature in Information, Communications and Development (ICTD). Readings are selected from the range of disciplines contributing to this field: computer science, sociology, economics, business, public health, etc.

IS 290-8: Designing Rural Computing Applications (1 unit)
This class will investigate design methods for developing rural computing applications. The class will begin with a focus on participatory and value-sensitive design methods, and how they can be adapted for new cultures and social settings. We will also cover recent experiments in rural UI design, and what has been learned from them. We will conclude by discussing appropriate methods for design education in a rural computing context.
